NORTHERN THAILAND-LAOS TOUR

Palong hill tribe village, Chiang Dao

The tour starts in Chiang Rai, then passing through the Golden Triangle area, continues through the mountain wilderness to Thaton and further to Chiang Mai. From here a short flight will bring you to Luang Prabang, the former royal Laotian town on the banks of the Mekong River. The itinerary ends at the Laotian capital Vientiane.

DEPARTURE:

Daily, minimum 2 persons, private tour from Chiang Rai to Vientiane

DAY 1 CHIANG RAI

On arrival transfer to the hotel and day at leisure. In the evening opportunity to explore Chiang Rai?s little, but colorful night market. Overnight.

DAY 2 CHIANG RAI - THATON

Former king palace, Luang Prabang

In the morning first drive to Chiang Saen, the former royal Thai town. Then follow the mighty Mekong River until you reach the famous Golden Triangle. Visit the Opium Museum. Go on to Mae Sai, border- and market town. An optional side trip to the Burmese border town of Tachilek can be arranged. In the afternoon the tour continues through the mountain wilderness, passing many hill tribe villages, such as Akha, Yao or Lisu. Late afternoon arrive at the small town of Thaton. Overnight at a resort on the banks of the Kok River.

DAY 3 THATON - CHIANG MAI

Visit Wat Thaton, the picturesque hill top temple with its giant Buddha images and great views. Then continue towards Chiang Mai, the northern capital. On the way visit a rice mill, one of the rare Palong hill tribe villages, as well as a local market and an orchid farm. If time does allow, there will be some additional sightseeing in Chiang Mai. Overnight.

Kuangsi water fall, Luang Prabang

DAY 4 CHIANG MAI - LUANG PRABANG

In the morning take a sightseeing tour in Chiang Mai (also visit to an elephant camp possible). Early afternoon take a short flight to Luang Prabang, the former royal Laotian town. Visa for Laos on arrival. Transfer to the hotel. Late afternoon take a boat trip on the Mekong Riverto the holy Thum Ting caves, located at the junction of the Ou River, which enshrining numerous Buddha images. On the way back stop at a riverside village, which is famous for production of rice wine. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

DAY 5 LUANG PRABANG

Visit the picturesque Kuangxi waterfall and see some rural villages, including the weaving village of Ban Phanom. Return to Luang Prabang for a tour through the small town. Visit at least one of the ancient temples and the old royal palace.

Tat Luang Stupa, Vientiane

DAY 6 LUANG PRABANG - VIENTIANE

In the morning take a short flight to Vientiane, the Laotian capital. On arrival transfer to the hotel. Then start for a sightseeing tour through the capital, which includes all major sights, such as That Luang Stupa, Pratu Xai and the central market. Overnight in the city center.

DAY 7 VIENTIANE

Day at leisure until transfer to the airport or the Thai-Lao border at the Friendship Bridge near Nong Khai. Also transfer possible all the way to Udon Thani.

OPTIONS:

A side trip to Xiengkhouang with a visit to the Plain of Jars can be included in this itinerary. In that case we have to add another day/night. The same counts for a side trip to Vangvieng.

VISA:
A 15-days visa for Laos will be provided on arrival at Luang Prabang Airport (Day 4) for US$ 30.-
