Thailand online: Festivals in Thailand
On June 4th, 2012 (or 2555, as Thai calendars would count referring to Buddha's death), the whole of Thailand celebrates the highest Buddhist holiday, commemorating Siddharta Gautama Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death - all in one day. While all kinds of celebrations and festivities take place throughout the country, the center of action is without any doubt Sanaam Luang, the big public square right in front of the King's Grand Palace in Bangkok.
Here, a famous Buddha relic is on display, shown only once every year. And therefore a reason for many to pilgrim into the capital for worshiping and making merit. While the space directly around the shrine is used by people circling around clockwise, further away many temples and Buddhist associations install Buddha figures, tents and stalls that cater the masses with spiritual nurture and free food likewise.
In all, Visakha Bucha is a typical Thai festivity giving insight into Thai culture and Buddhist religion. And a good opportunity to meet 'real' Thai people away from tourist spots and beaches. Everybody is welcome, as long as respect towards the religious character of the feast will be obeyed.Don't miss next Visakha Bucha on May 24th, 2013!
